Statement on the Passing of Rev. Dr. Thomas FitzGerald
The Falling Asleep in the Lord of the Rev. Dr. Thomas FitzGerald.
It is with great sadness yet with hope in the resurrection, that Hellenic College Holy Cross announces the passing of Rev. Fr. Thomas FitzGerald, ThD, on December 29, 2024. Fr. FitzGerald dedicated nearly five decades to our school as Professor of Church History and Historical Theology from 1974 to 2022. He also held the position of Dean of Holy Cross for nearly a decade, with terms spanning from 2006–2013 and 2018–2019.
President Demetri Katos reflects, “Fr. FitzGerald was a guiding light at our school, inspiring academic excellence and fostering community among our students and staff. His contributions to theological scholarship and Christian unity leave an enduring legacy of faith, compassion, and dedication to Christ. I am grateful to him for the many ways in which he helped me as my professor and as my colleague. Countless alumni and many other colleagues feel the same.”
Fr. Eugen J. Pentiuc, Dean of Holy Cross, commented, “Among his numerous responsibilities, Fr. FitzGerald served exemplarily during his prolific ministry at Holy Cross. He will always remain in my memory with that subtle smile and formidable wisdom—a man of principles, navigating with balance and thoughtfulness through challenging times in the history of our school. May the Lord give him rest in peace!”
The HCHC community mourns Fr. FitzGerald’s passing while celebrating the enduring impact of his life and work. We extend heartfelt condolences to all who were touched by his wisdom and care, especially to his beloved wife, Presbytera Dr. Kyriaki (Karidoyanes) FitzGerald, an HCHC alumna (MDiv) and long-time adjunct professor. A 40-Day Memorial will be offered by the HCHC community, the details of which will be announced soon.
May his memory be eternal!
